USFS PUBLIC MEETINGS

Cibola Forest Plan Revision Public Meeting Schedule

Public Meetings Scheduled to Review Preliminary Draft Plan

Albuquerque, NM, June 1, 2016 – The Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands is revising its 1985 Forest Plan.  Over 40 cooperating units of government are working with us to co-convene and co-host the meetings, improve public engagement, and set the course for the future of the Cibola.  The Cibola and cooperating agencies have established four “landscape teams” around the four mountain ranges associated with the districts – Mt. Taylor, Magdalena, Mountainair, and Sandia.  The revised Forest Plan will provide guidance and direction on the future sustainability of the resources, goods and services, and relevant management actions, based on the values defined in the plan.  The plan will be used to share stewardship and direct site-specific priorities and projects in these locations in the future.

A preliminary Draft Plan has been completed and will be released in July 2016; the public will have 45 days to review and comment.  A series of collaborative public workshops have been scheduled to present the preliminary Draft Plan for review and discussion.  The workshops are being designed with the help of our partners to provide an opportunity for the public to engage in dialogue and collaboration with each other and diverse interests to find common vision and common ground for these shared places.  Please mark your calendar to attend one of these workshops:

Fire Restrictions Implemented on the Mountainair, and Sandia Ranger Districts

The Mountainair and Sandia Ranger Districts has implemented stage 2 fire restriction.

Record warm temperatures and exceptionally dry fuel moisture levels are expected to increase the fire danger level significantly. These condition are expected to continue over the next week or so.

Because of the increased fire danger, and to protect public health and safety, Stage II fire restrictions are  implemented.

Under Stage II fire restrictions, the following are prohibited:

•  Building or maintaining a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove

•  Explosives, fireworks, or any pyrotechnic device

•  Smoking, except in a vehicle or building or an area that has no vegetation such as a parking lot

•  Chainsaws or other equipment powered by a combustion engine (prohibited from 10 AM - 6 PM)

•  Welding or operating a torch with an open flame

•  Using a motor vehicle off of National Forest System roads, except in developed campgrounds and trailheads and areas within 10 feet of the roadway where there is no vegetation

•  Discharging firearms

The restriction orders will remain in effect until December 31, 2017, or until rescinded.  Violations of these orders are punishable by a fine of $5,000 for individuals, $10,000 for organizations, and/or 6 months of imprisonment.
